Bird Cherry Oat Aphids (BCOA)

Bird Cherry Oat Aphids are starting to reach critical numbers in many fields across the area.  These aphids are piercing, sucking insects that if sufficient in number can cause the plant sufficient stress to reduce yield enough to warrant an insecticide application.  (K-state data suggested a yield reduction of 4-9% before booting. Many economic thresholds suggest 20 or more aphids per stem).  If your field is "honey dewing", becoming greasy, oily, you are probably past that threshold.
