Canola and the Freeze

Canola and the Freeze

There are several locations scattered through out N. Central Oklahoma that seem to be showing early freeze damage from last weekends freeze.  The bulk of the damage seems to be on no till canola, especially where the residue is the most plentiful. It would appear the residue acted as insulation keeping the warmth of the soil from allowing some protection to the plant.

Remember the canola plant can lose leaves and as long as the bud remains viable more leaves will be forthcoming.  However, some of the smaller plants where the bud was above the residue may have already experienced a life threatening event.  Drought, no doubt, has accentuated this occurence.

Time will tell.
