First Hollow Stem

First Hollow Stem

I am calling first hollow stem in our area, at least in the early varieties.  Found it in central Garfield, west side of Kay, and barely in Grant. All examples were in ungrazed fields.  Very late, but if any one still has cattle on the wheat they should start removing them now for best yield.  I suspect the time lapse between "FHS" and joint will be shorter than usual as the wheat plant tries to catch up.  If it ever warms up.
