The Sphinx

The Sphinx

The last couple of years we have come across a migration of very large, horned worms (think tomato worm, but not) in north central Oklahoma.  Usually by someone calling me, or actually running over a hundred of them while they cross the road.  I believe they are the larvae of the white lined sphinx moth (the ones that look like a humming bird). Most of the time they eat weeds such as primrose, purslane, etc..  They look much more harmful than they seem to be, but if you see a bunch of them in your tender soybeans eating leaves, you might have to address the issue.
